The SMART MAT (Vital Alert Sensor Mat) is an innovative fibre-optic bedside monitoring system that measures heart rate, breathing rate, blood pressure, and oxygen saturation without the need for wires or wearables. In a validation study of over 300 healthy adults, it showed strong accuracy for heart rate, respiratory rate, and oxygen saturation, while blood pressure—especially systolic readings—was less reliable and requires integration with a clinical-grade monitor. Compact and contact-free, the SMART MAT (Vital Alert Sensor Mat) offers a promising solution for continuous, comfortable vital-sign monitoring in community and home care settings, with further clinical validation underway.
